1. What is esophageal cancer: It is a disease in which malignant tumors have appeared from the epithelial cells of the esophagus, causing the cells to divide without following the structure of the body, creating tumors. This is one of the common cancers in the digestive tract. With different manifestations in each stage, esophageal cancer is often difficult to detect in the early stages, often only when the disease has progressed can the patient detect and treat it.
2. Causes of esophageal cancer: Originating from the esophagus, there are two main types of diseases: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, depending on the type of cancer-causing cells. Currently, science has not yet determined the cause of esophageal cancer, but the following risk factors can be listed:
- Abuse of stimulants such as alcohol, beer and tobacco
- Obese people, people with esophageal diseases
- People with unscientific diets, fat abuse, lack of vitamins A, B2, C, maintaining the habit of eating a lot of foods containing nitrosamines…
- Some diseases that are the basis for the development of esophageal cancer include: pharyngeal cancer, small intestine disease, plantar keratosis…
- Patients with a history of cancer in the head and neck area
3. Symptoms of esophageal cancer
Some signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer are as follows:
- The most common sign is a feeling of choking when swallowing, stuck behind the sternum when eating solid foods. When the disease progresses, the patient also feels choked when drinking water and using liquids. In some cases, the disease is in the late stage, when the tumor is necrotic in the esophagus, so after a period of choking on liquid foods, they return to normal eating and drinking.
- Regurgitation: persistent bronchitis caused by fluid flowing from the esophagus into the airways, causing food to be regurgitated when the patient sleeps.
- In addition to the two basic signs above, there are some other recognizable signs such as: more saliva than normal, hoarseness, prolonged cough, prominent wrinkles on the face and hands, rapid weight loss for unknown reasons, and dry, dark skin.
When the body has the above signs, it is necessary to go to medical facilities for a health check, timely detection and treatment of the disease.
